General Dentist Procedures for Fixing ChippedTeeth

Thinking about choosing a General Dentist to fix one or more chips in the teeth? One of the reasons why people are deciding to see general dentists is because they are very versatile dental professionals. This means they can offer both general and cosmetic dental services, even as it relates to chipped teeth.

Examples of procedures provided by a general dentist

Examples of procedures provided by general dentists include dental examinations, dental cleanings, dental fillings, root canals, teeth whitening services and restoration services. One of the more common procedures general dentists perform is fixing chipped teeth.

Procedures used to repair chips in one’s teeth

It is essential for dental patients to understand that if any chips in their teeth are not repaired quickly, it is possible for them to experience further damage to their teeth. The list below includes some of the more common procedures a general dentist uses to fix chips in their patients' teeth.

Dental filling

A general dentist will often choose to use dental fillings to fix a patient's chipped tooth when the chip is very small. This option is often reserved for fixing chips on the back teeth. If there is a need to remove some of the area around the chip, the dentist will do this before placing the dental filling. A tooth-colored filling is often used, as this supports a patient's overall cosmetics. When someone experiences a small chip on one of their front teeth, the dentist will often use dental bonding in order to repair a front chipped tooth.

Dental bonding

Both mild to moderate chips can often be fixed using a dental bonding procedure from a general dentist. This restoration option requires the dentist to remove a very small amount of a tooth’s enamel in order to make the bonding material properly stick to the tooth. The general dentist will use the bonding material to not only cover up and thus fix the chip, they will also make sure that the tooth is once again cosmetically pleasing. Bonding is a fairly simple process that often only requires a patient to make one dental visit to repair their chipped tooth.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns are commonly used to fix severely chipped teeth. When a tooth has a very large or serious chip in it, it is possible for the chip to jeopardize the overall health of the tooth. Crowns make teeth stronger and more durable, allowing the tooth to once again function as it is supposed to and without the need to worry anymore about the chip causing any more dental problems.
